Craig – Thanks. Not sure what you mean exactly, but I was listening in on a Chinese University of HK professor interviewing the kids (in English) and they were all very open and friendly, just ordinary students with a passion for this kind of stuff. Nothing that resembles the “stereotype”. I remember a few of my Taiwanese friends and Taiwan expats calling them all kinds of unflattering names, but now I’m not sure I see how that’s much different than some of the things other groups do. Sorry for not being too clear – I meant the gathering of photographers to shoot them during the events is what’s strange and that I’m not really a fan of it as a photographer. If I stumble across one, I’ll probably shoot for a while, but wouldn’t go out of my way to go to one. To me, it’s easier to just shoot a model. Each to their own though – I know some people love it.
Craig – oh, I misunderstood 🙂 I see your point. Well, I think many of the photographers there come to “find work” and socialize. I got a few business cards and checked out some of their work which was quite remarkable. Cosplayers have their own social websites, their own magazines, merchandise, fashion, stores, restaurants etc. so some photographers can make a good living just by focusing on that niche. I think there’s also a darker side to the whole thing with the more adult related Cosplay industry and I sometimes get the feeling some of the photographers there are hunting… Read more »
