Fo Guang Shan in southern Taiwan near Kaohsuing is one of the largest temples in Taiwan. I have only visited once, long ago, when my mom came to visit me in Taiwan in 2009. Back then, we had a female Buddhist monk showing us around and were in a bit of a schedule, so I’ve always wanted to go back and tour again by myself to remind myself what’s there. As you can see from my 2009 post, the photos do not do this place justice, so when I finally made it back in 2023 I was very surprised that I remembered very little and just how large and awe inspiring this place is. I spent half a day there, walking around for hours, and exploring the different parts. I realized, that my visit in 2009 did not cover all the grounds, likely because the grand Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum only opened up to the public in 2011. Lots to see of the temple and surrounding area, and there are a few vegan options to dine in the complex. Definitely one the must-do highlights of southern Taiwan if you’re ever in the Kaohsiung area and have a car.
